STAND FOR SOVEREIGNTY

TREATY TRIBES CONFERENCE

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

JULY 14, 15, 16, 2000

Pine Ridge Agency, South Dakota

"…as long as green grass grows and rivers flow…"

It is often stated that, "treaties are the supreme law of the land". The Oglala Lakota Band of the Great Sioux Nation decided to test those legal waters on January 16, 2000 by taking peaceful control of the Tribe’s administrative offices. While the initial focus was to remove corrupt politicians from office, the Grass Roots Oglala Lakota Oyate quickly realized that the only effective remedy would be to reestablish a more culturally based, people-centered tribal government.

The Oglala Lakota are involved in a historic process of reviving self-governance amongst our people. Our sovereignty is under siege by federal and state jurisdiction and we believe that this may be our last stand to abolish the oppressive IRA form of governance and restore the treaty as the true governance system.

The Grass Roots Oglala Lakota Oyate will host a three-day meeting of tribes from the United States and Canada. The purpose of this meeting is to forge a coalition of tribes to establish a mutual defense pact to defend the aboriginal and treaty rights of the indigenous nations of North American and to jointly formulate a strategy to alleviate the need for the oppressive BIA.

All tribes are welcome and we especially encourage treaty elders to attend as we embark on our quest for traditional governance and true sovereign status. A tipi encampment will be erected at the meeting site and you are encouraged to bring your tribal flag and your tipi or tent for your stay. There will be a feast and traditional pow-wow in the evenings, so bring your regalia.
